There has been a lot of attention given to a new form of gastric surgery in the past year and more and more people who are dealing with morbid obesity are turning to this new procedure to help them get permanent relief from bariatric problems. The procedure is called micro sleeve gastrectomy or just micro sleeve surgery. To explain how it is different and revolutionary we should first take a look at the procedure that this new surgery has been replacing for the past couple of years.

The most common form of gastric surgery to deal with bariatric disorders in the past has been the simple gastric bypass surgery. In this operation the patient’s stomach is divided into a larger part and a smaller part, about the size of a cup. The larger part of the stomach is sectioned off and isolated from the digestive tract and the smaller cup sized part is all that is left to function as the stomach. This leads to much smaller eating capacity and results in significant weight loss. The patient needs to be on a bariatric liquid diet for a few weeks after the surgery while the incisions heal. Thereafter the patient must eat a diet with a calorie count of 1400 or less daily.

In a micro sleeve surgery up to seventy five percent or three fourths of the patient’s stomach is completely surgically removed and the rest of the stomach is fashioned through moulding and stitching into a much smaller stomach. The effect is the same as a simple gastric bypass operations but since the operation is done through a single laproscopic incision there is only a very tiny scar and the recovery of the patient is much faster.

This form of surgery is fast becoming one of the most popular bariatric surgical procedures in the United States and as some studies estimate that up to and over half of the US population is now clinically overweight this operation is only going to get more popular.
